Spiritual Care

Coordinator of Pastoral Care/Chaplain: The Rev. Deborah HafnerDeWinter, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Spiritual Care at The Lutheran Care Center is expressed in a concern for all who are a part of our  “household” -- our residents, their families, our staff and our volunteers.

We seek to provide spiritual and emotional support in a variety of ways. On Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m., Eucharistic worship services are offered in the Lutheran tradition while respecting the ecumenical nature of our “household.”

Roman Catholic Mass, led by The Rev. John J. Backes and his spiritual care team from St. Stanislaus KostkaRoman Catholic Church in Pleasant Valley, NY, is offered on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. A rabbi is available on an on-call basis and parish clergy of all residents are warmly welcomed and are encouraged to visit.  We ask that visiting clergy sign in at the Clergy Visitation binder provided at the reception desk.
Pastoral care and counseling are offered to residents, their families and our staff. A weekly Lutheran Care Choir practice takes place in the chapel on Tuesday mornings, and Bible study and prayer times are regularly offered so that residents can express faith and grow spiritually. On a quarterly basis, a “Celebration of Life” service is offered for families, residents and friends of those who have died from within our “household.” Special ecumenical services are scheduled on Ash Wednesday and Thanksgiving in partnership with the clergy, deacons and choirs of St. John’s Lutheran Church and First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The Coordinator of Pastoral Care and members of our pastoral care team visit residents regularly. Consultation is provided to all departments on religious and ethical matters. Support is given in the area of palliative care, end-of-life decisions and bereavement.
